This article explains how to create a discount code that can be used by customers on a checkout page.
First go to "Shop", click on "Discount codes" and then choose "Create".
Code: In the "Code" section, enter a name for the new discount code (for example, DISCOUNT10). Click "Generate code" to generate a random code.
Value: Select the form discount you want to give in the "Value" option. Enter a monetary amount or percentage.
Start and end date: At Start date, select the date from which the discount code can be used. Click "Set End Date" and select a date in the calendar to determine when the discount ends.
Limit use of the code: You can also set how often this discount code can be used in total. For example, if you set a limit of 100, the discount code can be used by customers 100 times and will automatically be deactivated after that.
If you want to limit the use of the code per member, it is also possible to set a limit here. For example, if you set a limit of 1, the discount code can be used 1 time per customer (based on email address).
Set minimum purchase amount: The "Set Minimum Purchase Amount" option requires members to spend a minimum amount to qualify for the discount. If the discount applies to a specific product, only those items contribute to the minimum purchase amount.
Applies to: Finally, in the "Applies to" section, select what this discount will apply to: The entire order or specific products. If the discount applies to specific products, use the search field and click the "add" button to add the relevant product.
Finally, click on the "Create" button to save the discount code.
Your new discount code will now be displayed on the Shop > Discount codes page in your MemBirds dashboard.
From the moment the code becomes active, a green check mark will be displayed. When the code is not (yet) or no longer active, you will see a red cross. You can also see here how often the code has been used by customers in total.
Discount amount calculation
If you have entered a monetary discount amount, the discount will be applied pro rata to all products in the checkout, unless you have selected specific products to which the discount applies.
For example, if you applied a $50 discount to a checkout with a $50 product and a $100 product, the first product would be discounted $16.67 and the second product would be discounted $33.33.
Example calculation
Discount amount = $50
Product A = $50
Product B = $100
Totaal Checkout = $150
Product A / Total Checkout * 100 = %33,33
Discount amount * 33,33 / 100 = $16,67
Product B 100 / 150 * 100 = %66,67
Discount amount * 66,67 / 100 = $33,33
$16,67 + $33,33 = $50
If the total value of the order is less than $50, each product's discount will be $0. The order value cannot be less than $0.
Add start- or end date
If you create a discount code with a start or end date and/or time, the time will be entered according to the time zone set on the Settings > General > Time Zone page.
If the time zone there is set to Europe/Amsterdam and you enter a start date of November 26 at 12:00 p.m. in the voucher, the discount will start in the Netherlands on November 26 at 12:00 p.m., but in England this will be at 11:00 a.m. and New York at 6 a.m.
